And why do I say that Leonardo da Vinci’s mural is an expensive painting? Because the work is assumed to have been started around 1495–96. And was commissioned as part of a plan of renovations to the church and its convent buildings by Leonardo’s patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Apostles. When Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.
Due to the methods used, a variety of environmental factors, and intentional damage, little of the original painting remains today. Although there have been numerous restoration attempts, the last was completed in 1999.
The significance of the last supper mural(s)
The Last Supper of Jesus was the last time Jesus and his disciples dined together. And is the subject of many murals by various painters. Do you know that the Last Supper is not a belief but a real event in the life of Jesus? As described in the Gospels of the New Testament. And not only in the Gospels but also by Non-Christian Historians.
It is one of the major events attributed to the life of Jesus. And a founding event in Christianity, which has served and inspired Christian ceremonies. As well as theological ideas, folk legends, and works of art.
You will notice in most of these murals that the event took place in a room. And the Room is the hall where, according to the belief of most Christian churches, the Last Supper of Christ took place. It is called in Latin the name Canculum, meaning “dining room”. In English, it is sometimes also called “The upper room”. Click the link here to watch a video of the historical Upper Room.

The Last Supper is especially remembered by Christians on Maundy Thursday (Thursday before Easter). It provides the basis of scripture for the ritual or holy communion of the Eucharist. Previously, feast symbols only indicated the Hebrews’ redemption from Egypt. But on that Thursday night, Jesus revealed the Messianic significance of two symbols: Bread and Wine. Bread and wine are important symbols representing the blood of the Holy God and Jesus which can be inferred from the following.
Breaking the bread, Jesus said, “Eat, eat; This is my body ”(Matthew 26:26). In scripture, yeast is a symbol of sin, so bread without yeast represents the holy God.
The second symbol, which Jesus highlighted, is inserted four times in a cedar. Scholars believe that this is the third cup – known as the cup of redemption. To which Christ stated that it is “the blood of my covenant, poured out for the forgiveness of the sins of many.” ( Matthew 26: 27–28).
